Epidemiologists look at outbreak investigations in an effort to control the spread of disease and reduce illness and deaths in a population.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--learning-objectives\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Learning Objectives<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nBy the end of this chapter, you will be able to:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Understand and describe infectious disease terms<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Understand the three sides of the epidemiologic triangle and understand the characteristics of agents, hosts, and environments<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Describe modes of transmission of infectious disease<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Sequence the process for investigating infectious disease outbreaks<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<h2>Infectious Disease Terms<\/h2>\r\nInfectious Disease is a disease caused by an infectious agent, which includes, bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and other organisms\r\n\r\nContagious Disease is disease that is caused by direct and indirect contact with a pathogenic or infectious agent\r\n\r\nCommunicable diseases are a disease that arises from transmission of a specific infectious agent to a susceptible host\r\n\r\nParasitic diseases are an infection caused by a parasite which is an animal or plant that gets nutrients by living on or in an organism of another species. A complete parasite gets its nutrients from the host organism, but a semi-parasite gets only some of its nutrients from the host. <a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>\r\n\r\nInfection is the entry and development of infectious agents in people, animals, or the environment\r\n<h2>The Epidemiologic Triangle<\/h2>\r\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=q-17icRTMyY&amp;t=38s\r\n\r\nThe epidemiologic triangle is a model used to understand health problems while understanding infectious disease and how it is spread.\u00a0 The three sides of the triangle include the agent, host , and the environment.\r\n\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-53\" src=\"https:\/\/pb-sandbox.library.illinois.edu\/introductiontoepidemiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2024\/08\/Epidemiologic-Triangle-300x127.jpg\" alt=\"These two images show the three components of the epidemiologic triangle; the agent, environment and host.\" width=\"300\" height=\"127\" \/>\r\n\r\nFigure 2.1: The Epidemiologic Triangle\r\n\r\nThese are two graphics that show the three sides of the epidemiologic triangle: agent, host, and environment.\r\n\r\nThe agent was originally referred to an infectious microorganism or pathogen: a virus, bacterium, parasite, or other microbe. Generally, the agent must be present for disease to occur; however, presence of that agent alone is not always sufficient to cause disease. A variety of factors influence whether exposure to an organism will result in disease, including the organism\u2019s pathogenicity (ability to cause disease) and dose.\r\n\r\nOver time, the concept of agent has been broadened to include chemical and physical causes of disease or injury. These include chemical contaminants (such as the L-tryptophan contaminant responsible for eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome), as well as physical forces (such as repetitive mechanical forces associated with carpal tunnel syndrome). While the epidemiologic triad serves as a useful model for many diseases, it has proven inadequate for cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other diseases that appear to have multiple contributing causes without a single necessary one.\r\n\r\nHosts are organisms, usually humans or animals, which are exposed to and harbor disease.\u00a0 A variety of factors intrinsic to the host, sometimes called risk factors, can influence an individual\u2019s exposure, susceptibility, or response to a causative agent. Opportunities for exposure are often influenced by behaviors such as sexual practices, hygiene, and other personal choices as well as by age and sex. Susceptibility and response to an agent are influenced by factors such as genetic composition, nutritional and immunologic status, anatomic structure, presence of disease or medications, and psychological makeup.\r\n\r\nThe environment\u00a0refers to extrinsic factors or favorable surrounding or conditions that affect the agent and the opportunity for exposure. Environmental factors include physical factors such as geology and climate, biologic factors such as insects that transmit the agent, and socioeconomic factors such as crowding, sanitation, and the availability of health services. <a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>\r\n\r\nOne other consideration of the epidemiologic triangle to consider is the center.\u00a0 The center of the triangle is time.\u00a0 Most infectious diseases have an incubation period known as the time between when the host is infected and when disease symptoms occur.\u00a0 Time can also be described as the duration of the illness or the amount of time a person can be sick before death or recovery.\u00a0 We can also look at time from a community public health perspective where it is described as the period from an infection to the threshold of an epidemic of a population.\r\n\r\nThe three sides of the epidemiologic triangle can also be looked at as what, who, and where or the etiology of infectious disease transmission. <a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a>\r\n\r\nThe mission of epidemiologists is to break at least one side of the triangle disrupting the connection between the agent, host, and the environment.\r\n\r\nWhen studying epidemiology, most infectious disease agents are microbes.\u00a0 Typical disease-causing microbes are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.\u00a0 These agents are often called microorganisms, and they live best in environments that support their growth.\u00a0 The environments could be water, humans, blood, and even high temperatures.\r\n\r\nTest your knowledge on these Infectious Disease Terms:\r\n\r\n[h5p id=\"1\"]\r\n<h2>Infectious Disease Transmission<\/h2>\r\nMicrobes occupy all of our body surfaces, including the skin, gut, and mucous membranes. In fact, our bodies contain at least 10 times more bacterial cells than human ones, blurring the line between where microbes end and humans begin. Microbes in the human gastrointestinal tract alone comprise at least 10 trillion organisms, representing more than 1,000 species, which are thought to prevent the gut from being colonized by disease-causing organisms. Among their other beneficial roles, microbes synthesize vitamins, break down food into absorbable nutrients, and stimulate our immune systems.\r\n\r\nThe vast majority of microbes establish themselves as persistent \u201ccolonists,\u201d thriving in complex communities within and on our bodies. In many cases, the microbes derive benefits without harming us; in other cases, both host and microbe benefit.\r\n\r\nAnd though some microbes make us sick and even kill us, in the long run they have a shared interest in our survival. For these tiny invaders, a dead host is a dead end.\r\n\r\nThe success of microorganisms is due to their remarkable adaptability. Through natural selection, organisms that are genetically better suited to their surroundings have more offspring and transmit their desirable traits to future generations. This process operates far more efficiently in the microbial world than in people. Humans produce a new generation every 20 years or so; bacteria do it every 20 to 30 minutes, and viruses even faster. Because they reproduce so quickly, microorganisms can assemble in enormous numbers with great variety in their communities. If their environment suddenly changes, the community\u2019s genetic variations make it more likely that some will survive. There are six components and like the epidemiologic triangle the goal of epidemiologists as well as health care providers and even yourself, is to break the chain!\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Microorganisms or Agents<\/strong>: Disease producing, also called pathogens\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Virus, parasite, fungus, bacterium<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Risk factors: Virulence, pathogenicity, ability to enter host<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Reservoir\/Source<\/strong>: Environment\/habitat where a pathogen can live and multiply\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Environmental surfaces\/equipment, body fluids (blood, saliva), urine\/fecal material, food\/water, soil, skin, respiratory tract<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Portal of Exit<\/strong>: How the pathogen exits or leaves reservoir\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Skin to skin, skin to surface, blood, mucous membranes, oral cavity, fecal<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Other potentially infectious material (OPIM): Seminal fluid, joint fluid, saliva, urine\/fecal material, any bodily fluid contaminated with blood<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Modes of Transport<\/strong>: How a pathogen moves from reservoir to susceptible host\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Direct Transmission: Airborne, droplet, contact (e.g., skin), bite, needlestick or other sharps injury<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Indirect Transmission: Fomites \u2013 contaminated equipment or medication (multidose vials, single dose vials), vectors, food, water<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Portal of Entry<\/strong>: Opening where the pathogen may enter\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Body openings (e.g., mouth, eyes, urinary tract, respiratory tract), incisions, wounds<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Susceptible Host<\/strong>: The person at-risk: patient or healthcare worker\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Factors affecting susceptibility (e.g., age, health, co-morbidities, immune system, nutrition, infective dose, medications)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54\" src=\"https:\/\/pb-sandbox.library.illinois.edu\/introductiontoepidemiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2024\/08\/CDC-Chain-of-Infection.jpeg\" alt=\"This is a n image of the six components of the Chain of Infection\" width=\"204\" height=\"192\" \/>\r\n\r\nFigure 2.2: Image and Components of the Disease Chain of Infection. <a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a>\r\n<h2>Breaking the Chain of Infection<\/h2>\r\nTo break the chain of infection and stop the spread of infectious disease, these three strategies can be considered:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Controlling or eliminating the agent at the source of transmission<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Protecting the portals of entry<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Increasing a host defense<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nTargeting one or more of these strategies can help slow or stop the spread of infectious disease.\r\n\r\nThe first step in breaking the chain of infection is to identify the pathogen that might be putting animal or humans at risk.\u00a0 This allows for treatment protocols specific to the disease-causing agent to be considered.\u00a0 Here are some examples to help you understand this first step in breaking the chain of infection.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--examples\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Examples<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nBacterial Infection:\r\n\r\nYou test positive for strep throat, a bacterial infection.\u00a0 Treating you with antibiotics will clear the infection and reduce the spread to others.\r\n\r\nSafety Consideration in Cooking:\r\n\r\nYou are cooking chicken for dinner; it needs to be cooked to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the microorganisms\u00a0 that might be on the chicken.\u00a0 Cooking the chicken to the correct temperature ensures that the potential microorganisms will be reduced to a safe level prior to consumption.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<span style=\"text-align: initial;font-size: 1em\">Other interventions help prevent the spread of disease by targeting the portal of entry.\u00a0 These strategies could include wearing personal protective equipment like disposable gloves, masks, condoms, and face shields when you are knowingly exposed to pathogens or infected individuals.\u00a0 Practicing proper handwashing, isolating those with infectious disease to minimize contact with others , covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when you are sick,\u00a0\u00a0 and staying up to date on immunizations are all infection disease control efforts that allow you to take action in stopping the spread of disease. <\/span><a style=\"text-align: initial;font-size: 1em\" href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a>\r\n<h2>Immunity and Immunization<\/h2>\r\nImmunity to a disease is achieved through the presence of antibodies top that disease within a person\u2019s body system.\u00a0 Antibodies are disease specific, and immunity will depend on exposure.\r\n\r\nIndividuals develop immunity in one of two ways.\u00a0 Natural immunity is acquired from exposure to the disease organism through infection with the actual disease ( You are exposed to Varicella zoster and develop chicken pox).\u00a0 Or an individual gets immunized and benefits from vaccine-induced immunity\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (you get a varicella zoster immunization and are now protected against chicken pox exposure) which is acquired through the introduction of a killed or weakened form of the organism through immunization.\r\n\r\nThere are three types of immunity that help individuals and communities benefit from disease risks and high levels of disease.\u00a0 The three types of immunity are active immunity, passive immunity and her immunity.\r\n\r\nActive immunity occurs when exposure to a disease organism triggers the immune system to produce antibodies to that disease.\u00a0 Individuals\u2019 active immunity can be acquired two ways; through natural immunity or vaccine-induced immunity.\u00a0 Passive immunity is provided when a person is given antibodies to a disease rather than producing them through their own immune system.\u00a0 Passive immunity often happens when a newborn baby acquires passive immunity from its mother\u2019s placenta.\u00a0 People may also get passive immunity through immune globin antibody-containing blood products.\u00a0 These are often given when immediate protection from a specific disease is needed.\u00a0 <a href=\"#_ftn6\">[6]<\/a>\r\n\r\nPassive immunity is immediate where active immunity takes time to develop.\u00a0 Active immunity is much more long-lasting where passive immunity may only last a few weeks or months.\r\n\r\nThe last type of immunity is herd immunity.\u00a0 Herd immunity is also known as population immunity.\u00a0 Herd immunity is the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is immune either through immunization or immunity developed through previous infection.\u00a0 According to the WHO, World Health Organization, herd immunity is best achieved through immunization.\u00a0 If there is herd immunity in a population, this will greatly reduce the likeliness of disease transmission from one person to another. <a href=\"#_ftn7\">[7]<\/a>\r\n\r\nEither way immunity is achieved when an individual is exposed to disease in the future, their immune system will recognize it and immediately produce the antibodies needed to fight it.\u00a0 Active immunity is long-lasting and sometimes can last a lifetime.\u00a0 It is important to consider your immunity and immunization status when accessing your risk of infectious disease.\r\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--examples\"><header class=\"textbox__header\">\r\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Examples of Where to find out more\u00a0 about Disease Outbreaks:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/header>\r\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\r\n\r\nTake look at these links for more information on Disease Outbreaks:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>For a current list of Disease Outbreaks take a look at this link from the CDC: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/outbreaks\/index.html\">Current CDC Outbreaks<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Disease Outbreak News from the World Health Organization, WHO: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\">Disease Outbreak News from the WHO<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<h2>Infectious Disease Outbreak investigation<\/h2>\r\nWatch this short CDC video on How an Outbreak is Investigated?\r\n\r\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kYFIqTbRd2o\r\n\r\nOutbreak epidemiology investigation is to study an epidemic to gain control over it and prevent further spread of disease.\r\n\r\nAn outbreak typically is a sudden increase in the disease frequency related to place, time and population impacted.\u00a0 Because of thousands of outbreaks that have been reported and investigated by local health departments, public health agencies and the CDC spread of disease has been contained but not without impact on the observed population.\r\n\r\nLaunching an outbreak investigation requires planning and strategy. In public health epidemiologists and other public health experts use a series of steps to answer 3 key questions, \u201cwhat is the problem? what is the cause? and what can we do about it?\u201d. They use information and data to make decisions throughout an outbreak investigation. Sometimes, the data is not easy to read. So, experts use a variety of strategies and studies to try to identify the source of an outbreak and what works to control it. Generally, the agent must be present for disease to occur; however, presence of that agent alone is not always sufficient to cause disease. A variety of factors influence whether exposure to an organism will result in disease, including the organism\u2019s pathogenicity (ability to cause disease) and dose.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, the concept of agent has been broadened to include chemical and physical causes of disease or injury. These include chemical contaminants (such as the L-tryptophan contaminant responsible for eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome), as well as physical forces (such as repetitive mechanical forces associated with carpal tunnel syndrome). While the epidemiologic triad serves as a useful model for many diseases, it has proven inadequate for cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other diseases that appear to have multiple contributing causes without a single necessary one.<\/p>\n<p>Hosts are organisms, usually humans or animals, which are exposed to and harbor disease.\u00a0 A variety of factors intrinsic to the host, sometimes called risk factors, can influence an individual\u2019s exposure, susceptibility, or response to a causative agent. Opportunities for exposure are often influenced by behaviors such as sexual practices, hygiene, and other personal choices as well as by age and sex. Susceptibility and response to an agent are influenced by factors such as genetic composition, nutritional and immunologic status, anatomic structure, presence of disease or medications, and psychological makeup.<\/p>\n<p>The environment\u00a0refers to extrinsic factors or favorable surrounding or conditions that affect the agent and the opportunity for exposure. Environmental factors include physical factors such as geology and climate, biologic factors such as insects that transmit the agent, and socioeconomic factors such as crowding, sanitation, and the availability of health services. <a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One other consideration of the epidemiologic triangle to consider is the center.\u00a0 The center of the triangle is time.\u00a0 Most infectious diseases have an incubation period known as the time between when the host is infected and when disease symptoms occur.\u00a0 Time can also be described as the duration of the illness or the amount of time a person can be sick before death or recovery.\u00a0 We can also look at time from a community public health perspective where it is described as the period from an infection to the threshold of an epidemic of a population.<\/p>\n<p>The three sides of the epidemiologic triangle can also be looked at as what, who, and where or the etiology of infectious disease transmission. <a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The mission of epidemiologists is to break at least one side of the triangle disrupting the connection between the agent, host, and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>When studying epidemiology, most infectious disease agents are microbes.\u00a0 Typical disease-causing microbes are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.\u00a0 These agents are often called microorganisms, and they live best in environments that support their growth.\u00a0 The environments could be water, humans, blood, and even high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Test your knowledge on these Infectious Disease Terms:<\/p>\n<div id=\"h5p-1\">\n<div class=\"h5p-iframe-wrapper\"><iframe id=\"h5p-iframe-1\" class=\"h5p-iframe\" data-content-id=\"1\" style=\"height:1px\" src=\"about:blank\" frameBorder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" title=\"Infectious Disease Terms\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Infectious Disease Transmission<\/h2>\n<p>Microbes occupy all of our body surfaces, including the skin, gut, and mucous membranes. In fact, our bodies contain at least 10 times more bacterial cells than human ones, blurring the line between where microbes end and humans begin. Microbes in the human gastrointestinal tract alone comprise at least 10 trillion organisms, representing more than 1,000 species, which are thought to prevent the gut from being colonized by disease-causing organisms. Among their other beneficial roles, microbes synthesize vitamins, break down food into absorbable nutrients, and stimulate our immune systems.<\/p>\n<p>The vast majority of microbes establish themselves as persistent \u201ccolonists,\u201d thriving in complex communities within and on our bodies. In many cases, the microbes derive benefits without harming us; in other cases, both host and microbe benefit.<\/p>\n<p>And though some microbes make us sick and even kill us, in the long run they have a shared interest in our survival. For these tiny invaders, a dead host is a dead end.<\/p>\n<p>The success of microorganisms is due to their remarkable adaptability. Through natural selection, organisms that are genetically better suited to their surroundings have more offspring and transmit their desirable traits to future generations. This process operates far more efficiently in the microbial world than in people. Humans produce a new generation every 20 years or so; bacteria do it every 20 to 30 minutes, and viruses even faster. Because they reproduce so quickly, microorganisms can assemble in enormous numbers with great variety in their communities. If their environment suddenly changes, the community\u2019s genetic variations make it more likely that some will survive. There are six components and like the epidemiologic triangle the goal of epidemiologists as well as health care providers and even yourself, is to break the chain!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Microorganisms or Agents<\/strong>: Disease producing, also called pathogens\n<ul>\n<li>Virus, parasite, fungus, bacterium<\/li>\n<li>Risk factors: Virulence, pathogenicity, ability to enter host<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reservoir\/Source<\/strong>: Environment\/habitat where a pathogen can live and multiply\n<ul>\n<li>Environmental surfaces\/equipment, body fluids (blood, saliva), urine\/fecal material, food\/water, soil, skin, respiratory tract<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Portal of Exit<\/strong>: How the pathogen exits or leaves reservoir\n<ul>\n<li>Skin to skin, skin to surface, blood, mucous membranes, oral cavity, fecal<\/li>\n<li>Other potentially infectious material (OPIM): Seminal fluid, joint fluid, saliva, urine\/fecal material, any bodily fluid contaminated with blood<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Modes of Transport<\/strong>: How a pathogen moves from reservoir to susceptible host\n<ul>\n<li>Direct Transmission: Airborne, droplet, contact (e.g., skin), bite, needlestick or other sharps injury<\/li>\n<li>Indirect Transmission: Fomites \u2013 contaminated equipment or medication (multidose vials, single dose vials), vectors, food, water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Portal of Entry<\/strong>: Opening where the pathogen may enter\n<ul>\n<li>Body openings (e.g., mouth, eyes, urinary tract, respiratory tract), incisions, wounds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Susceptible Host<\/strong>: The person at-risk: patient or healthcare worker\n<ul>\n<li>Factors affecting susceptibility (e.g., age, health, co-morbidities, immune system, nutrition, infective dose, medications)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54\" src=\"https:\/\/pb-sandbox.library.illinois.edu\/introductiontoepidemiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2024\/08\/CDC-Chain-of-Infection.jpeg\" alt=\"This is a n image of the six components of the Chain of Infection\" width=\"204\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pb-sandbox.library.illinois.edu\/introductiontoepidemiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2024\/08\/CDC-Chain-of-Infection.jpeg 204w, https:\/\/pb-sandbox.library.illinois.edu\/introductiontoepidemiology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/321\/2024\/08\/CDC-Chain-of-Infection-65x61.jpeg 65w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Figure 2.2: Image and Components of the Disease Chain of Infection. <a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Breaking the Chain of Infection<\/h2>\n<p>To break the chain of infection and stop the spread of infectious disease, these three strategies can be considered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Controlling or eliminating the agent at the source of transmission<\/li>\n<li>Protecting the portals of entry<\/li>\n<li>Increasing a host defense<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Targeting one or more of these strategies can help slow or stop the spread of infectious disease.<\/p>\n<p>The first step in breaking the chain of infection is to identify the pathogen that might be putting animal or humans at risk.\u00a0 This allows for treatment protocols specific to the disease-causing agent to be considered.\u00a0 Here are some examples to help you understand this first step in breaking the chain of infection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"textbox textbox--examples\">\n<header class=\"textbox__header\">\n<p class=\"textbox__title\">Examples<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"textbox__content\">\n<p>Bacterial Infection:<\/p>\n<p>You test positive for strep throat, a bacterial infection.\u00a0 Treating you with antibiotics will clear the infection and reduce the spread to others.<\/p>\n<p>Safety Consideration in Cooking:<\/p>\n<p>You are cooking chicken for dinner; it needs to be cooked to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit to reduce the microorganisms\u00a0 that might be on the chicken.\u00a0 Cooking the chicken to the correct temperature ensures that the potential microorganisms will be reduced to a safe level prior to consumption.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: initial;font-size: 1em\">Other interventions help prevent the spread of disease by targeting the portal of entry.\u00a0 These strategies could include wearing personal protective equipment like disposable gloves, masks, condoms, and face shields when you are knowingly exposed to pathogens or infected individuals.\u00a0 Practicing proper handwashing, isolating those with infectious disease to minimize contact with others , covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when you are sick,\u00a0\u00a0 and staying up to date on immunizations are all infection disease control efforts that allow you to take action in stopping the spread of disease. <\/span><a style=\"text-align: initial;font-size: 1em\" href=\"#_ftn5\">[5]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Immunity and Immunization<\/h2>\n<p>Immunity to a disease is achieved through the presence of antibodies top that disease within a person\u2019s body system.\u00a0 Antibodies are disease specific, and immunity will depend on exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals develop immunity in one of two ways.\u00a0 Natural immunity is acquired from exposure to the disease organism through infection with the actual disease ( You are exposed to Varicella zoster and develop chicken pox).\u00a0 Or an individual gets immunized and benefits from vaccine-induced immunity\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (you get a varicella zoster immunization and are now protected against chicken pox exposure) which is acquired through the introduction of a killed or weakened form of the organism through immunization.<\/p>\n<p>There are three types of immunity that help individuals and communities benefit from disease risks and high levels of disease.\u00a0 The three types of immunity are active immunity, passive immunity and her immunity.<\/p>\n<p>Active immunity occurs when exposure to a disease organism triggers the immune system to produce antibodies to that disease.\u00a0 Individuals\u2019 active immunity can be acquired two ways; In public health epidemiologists and other public health experts use a series of steps to answer 3 key questions, \u201cwhat is the problem? what is the cause? and what can we do about it?\u201d. They use information and data to make decisions throughout an outbreak investigation. Sometimes, the data is not easy to read. So, experts use a variety of strategies and studies to try to identify the source of an outbreak and what works to control it.
